 Vellaveli Brahmi Inscription

Vellaveli Brahmi Inscription is a rock-cut record on rocks in Thalavai (Vellavely) of BatticaloaSri Lanka. The place located 50 km away from Batticaloa through Kaluvanchikudy A4 road. The place is surrounded by rocks and hills. There are about four inscriptions, and 3 out of 4 cannot readable or damaged due to natural impact. Some parts of rocks are carved by human activity, which could have happened in ancient days.[1] The initial finding says that it is dated to approximately 2200 years,[1] and it has mix of both Brahmi and Prakrit.[2]

The inscription[edit]

The following letters can be seen in the inscription:[1][dubious ]

Parumaka Naavika Shamathaya Leno

 Tissamaharama Tamil Brahmi inscription

The inscription[edit]

The inscription is a combination of readable Brahmi and Megalithic graffiti symbols that are usually found in megalithic and early historic pottery in South India and Sri Lanka. From left to right, the first three are Brahmi letters, the next two are symbols and it is followed by two letters in Brahmi. There is a vertical line, away from the legend that may mark the end of the legend. Archeologist and etymologist, P. Ragupthy and epigraphist Iravatham Mahadevan both read the inscription as thiraLi muRi.[1][2] According archeologist Somadeva of Sri Lanka, the artifact is confirmed to be Tamil Brahmi.[3]

From left to right, the first letter of the legend is Brahmi Li which is a palatal L. As no word begins with this letter in Tamil, SinhalaPrakrit or Sanskrit, the word is read by Mahadevan by reading the three letters placed left to the symbols from right to left as tiraLi.[1][2]

The last letter of the legend as read from left to right is a Brahmi Ri which is a retroflex R. Retroflex R which is a unique phoneme found in Tamil and other related Dravidian languages but is also found in Indo-Aryan Prakrit inscriptions in Sri Lanka.[4] Mahadevan reads the last two letters placed right to the symbols from left to right as ‘muRi’.[1][2] It is the oldest dated Brahmi inscription in the world with the exception of the Brahmi inscriptions found in Palani in Southern India scientifically dated to 540 BCE - the oldest known Brahmi inscriptions on the Indian sub-continent.[5]

Direction of reading[edit]

According to P. Ragupathy Brahmi is usually written from left to right but in few occasions Tamil Brahmi was found to be written from right to left in Tamil Nadu.[6] In Sri Lanka, some examples have been found in which Brahmi was written from right to left as well.[7] But what is unique is this inscription is partly read from right to left and partly read from left to right, keeping symbols in the middle.[2]

Trade guild versus vessel for rice[edit]

Mahadevan reads the meaning of Tirali Muri as written agreement of the assembly. He further postulates that it indicates the presence of a Tamil trade guild in Southern Sri Lanka in the 2nd century BCE.[1] But P. Ragupathy reads it as indicating a vessel specified for the purpose of serving rice portions. He postulates that it indicates the presence of common people not a trade guild.[2]

Annaicoddai seal

220px-Aanaikkottai_seal.jpg

Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions mixed in with Megalithic Graffiti Symbols found in Annaikottai, Sri Lanka

Annaicoddai Seal is a steatite seal that was found in AnnaicoddaiSri Lanka during archeological excavations of a megalithic burial site by a team of researchers from the Jaffna University. The seal contains some of the oldest inscriptions in Tamil-Brahmi mixed with Megalithic Graffiti symbols found on the island and is dated to early 3rd or late 4th century BC. Although many pottery fragments have been found in excavations throughout Sri Lanka and Southern India that had both varieties of Brahmi and Megalithic Graffiti Symbols side by side, Annaicoddai seal is distinguished by having each written in a manner that indicates that the Megalithic Graffiti Symbols may be a translation of the Brahmi characters. Read from right to left, the legend is read as ‘Koveta’ (Ko-vet-a). Linguists read it as in South Dravidian or early Tamil indicating a chieftain or king. Similar inscriptions have been found throughout ancient Tamilakam, in modern day South India.[1][2] Investigators disagree on whether Megalithic Graffiti Symbols found in South India and Sri Lanka constitute an ancient writing system that preceded the introduction and widespread acceptance of Brahmi variant scripts or non lithic symbols. The purpose of usage remains unclear.[3]
