53 KIDS CHAINED IN PAK MADRASSA FOR BECOMING FIGHTERS FOR TALIBAN FREED

(Pak authorities have long suspected that some of these seminaries are involved in brainwashing students to join violent extremists, including the Taliban.)

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani police rescued 53 madrassa students, some as young as seven, who had been chained in the basement of a Karachi seminary, unearthing gruesome tales of dungeon torture and visits by Pakistani Taliban instructors, who some claimed were starting to prepare them to join the terror group’s jihad on the Afghan front. After Monday night’s raid on the seminary, Pakistani police said they were probing the institution’s possible links to terrorist groups.

Pakistani authorities have long suspected that some of these seminaries are involved in brainwashing students to join violent extremists, including the Taliban operating in the country’s tribal northwest. “We are being made mujahideen here. We are being made Taliban here. They say you should get training… we will send you to fight,” a student told Pakistan’s Geo TV. The disclosure forced Pakistan’s interior minister Rehman Malik to order a thorough probe into the Zakariya madrassa’s role in training the children, sent there by poor families for religious education, to become terrorist fighters.

Pakistan police said the chained students rescued from a Karachi madrassa were beaten and barely fed and that they have begun investigations into the seminary links to violent militant groups. “The rescued students included kids as young as seven and 21 teenagers,” a police officer said. He said most victims had signs of torture and developed wounds from the chains.

The police arrested some clerics, but the head cleric, who had arrived recently from Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtoon Khwa, bordering Afghanistan, and his four accomplices managed to flee. A rescued student told reporters that he had been kept confined for 30 days. “I did not see the sky or the sun even once,” he told reporters at a police station, where the students were questioned and then handed over to their relatives. He said their captors whipped them with belts and forced them to beg for food. Another student said he was kept chained in the basement for the past month. “They also tortured me severely during this period. I was beaten with sticks.”

But another police officer said many of those rescued were drug addicts brought to the seminary for treatment. “These people were not taken to there forcefully. In fact, the parents of many of them had themselves got their children admitted there.” He said some were also involved in other crimes. “They were tortured and kept in chains so that they did not run away.”

A parent corroborated Anwar’s claim. He told a TV channel that he had brought his 35-year-old drug addict brother to the seminary for rehabilitation. “The chains are not a problem. They are needed because without them heroin addicts run away.” AFP reported that accounts given to it by students and relatives indicated that impoverished families believed the madrassa could offer treatment to drug addicts and a religious education to the youngest boys.

No, this is not a scene from Dante's Inferno. These are Shiite Pilgrims Worshipping at Karbala Shrine

The mourners bleed after beating themselves with chains. The real motivation of these shows of piety, is to impress the young women watching from above with one's religiosity.

What does this have to do with spirituality?

Muslim Women must not touch Bananas- Fatwa

CLERIC ALLEGEDLY BANS WOMEN FROM TOUCHING BANANAS & CUCUMBERS…BECAUSE THEY’RE TOO SEXUAL

An Islamic cleric in Europe has reportedly ruled women should be forbidden from touching — or even being near — bananas and cucumbers because their oblong shapes can make women think of sex.

bananas-flickr-620x398.jpgEgyptian news site Bikya Masr:

The unnamed sheikh, who was featured in an article on el-Senousa news, was quoted saying that if women wish to eat these food items, a third party, preferably a male related to them such as their father or husband, should cut the items into small pieces and serve.

He said that these fruits and vegetables “resemble the male penis” and hence could arouse women or “make them think of sex.”

He also added carrots and zucchini to the list of forbidden foods for women.

According to Bikya Masr, the sheik was asked how to “control” women when they are out grocery shopping, and whether even holding the fruits and vegetables at the store would be bad. The cleric said the matter is between them and God.

Another question dealt with what to do if women in the family actually like to eat the forbidden foods: The sheik said they should be cut up in a hidden place where women cannot see them.

The cleric’s opinion prompted a wave of online mockery, the news site reported, with hundreds of comments denouncing him. One commenter reportedly said such religious “leaders” give Islam “a bad name,“ while another said the sheik is ”retarded” and must quit his post immediately. Still others accused him of simply trying to make headlines.

The report comes just days after Saudi Arabian academics claimed there would be no more virginsif women in the country were allowed to drive.

Cong may consider keepingmadrassas out of RTE ambit

Manjari Mishra, TNN | Dec 12, 2011, 02.32AM IST

LUCKNOW: After promising reservation for backward Muslims within the OBC quota, theCongress party is likely to accept the community leaders' demand to keep madrassas out of the Right To Education's ambit. The party general secretary Rahul Gandhi met rector of Nadwatul Uloom and president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Maulana Rabe Hasan Nadvi, on Sunday which gave away the first hint of a thaw between the government and the board. Both have been at loggerheads over the issue for almost a year.

Things had turned ugly in July last when AIMPLB had threatened to hit the street to "highlight the injustice" if their demand to exempt 10,000-odd madrasas from the RTE was not met. The places carefully shortlisted for the show of strength, interestingly, included Rae Bareli and Amethi - the constituencies of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul. The resolve was reiterated in Delhi during the board's last meeting on November 26. This time the resolution widened the scope of the agitation to cover entire UP. Rahul's initiative to douse the discontent by holding a dialogue with the board's chairperson could mean that a solution was in sight, sources said. This is another attempt by the Congress to capture the wavering minority votes in UP.

The issue figured prominently and took a large chunk of the one-hour meeting between the two parties, sources claimed. Rahul arrived at Nadwa with Congress MLA from Rae Bareli, Mohammad Muslim. Rest of the senior leaders were conspicuously missing. The last time Rahul had met the Maulana was in 2009 at the election time. He had accompanied Sonia and Priyanaka, on a visit to Dayra Shah Alam-ullah Takia Kalan - maulana's religious seat and residence in Rae Bareli . So, even as UPCC president Rita Bahuguna Joshi made light of the meeting by referring to it as "a courtesy call solicit the highly respected cleric's views on minority welfare issues," the visit created a stir in political circles.

Sources in the seminary told TOI that Rahul promised to take up the RTE issue with human resources development minister Kapil Sibal and minister for minorities welfare Salman Khurshid. "Rabe Miyan explained to him that although guidelines of the Act issued in February assures of exemption to religious institution, this needs to be incorporated in the Act by a proper amendment to provide a legal sanctity," a source said. "Rahul said that the intent was already there as shown by the guidelines and that he would talk to the two ministers and ensure that necessary steps were taken to clear the misunderstanding and break the impasse," he added.

According to party sources, after Nadva, Rahul is likely to visit Kichchocha Sharif, the apex body of Barelvi sect and the headquarters of All India Ulema and Mashaikh Board in Ambedkar Nagar. At a conference held here last month, the participants had demanded reservation to Muslim backwards as per the recommendation of Rangnath Commission, and also political representation, allocation of land for setting up educational institution at subsidised rate and scholarship to Muslim students from class VI onwards. Since most of the demands have already been met, it's time now to take credit and score a point," said a senior Congress leader.
