London: Russia has warned that jihadi fighters connected to al-Qaida are replacing genuine opposition fighters in Syria, putting the whole world at risk. After meeting British foreign secretary William Hague on Wednesday,Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said Kremlin could confirm that the dangerous group fighting in Syria in the name of being rebels was the Jabhat al-Nusra,which had direct links to al-Qaida.The US has declared it a terrorist organisation, Lavrov said. He warned that the heavy weaponry France and Britain were planning to provide the rebels to overthrow Syrian president Bashar-al-Assad might fall into the hands of extremists. Some days ago Bouthaini Shabaan, political adviser to Assad, had said Indianorigin jihadi fighters had been found fighting along with the rebels in the Syrian civil war.Earlier,UN peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi had said fighters of almost 38 nationalities were present in war-torn Syria Fears have also been expressed about how more than 100 British Muslims, and a few from the US,have gone to fight in the bloody uprising against Assad. This, experts feel,is creating a new cadre of jihadists in Britain, with Syria now the main destination for militant Muslims.

Photographs obtained by The Independent reveal how workers with drills and mechanical diggers have started demolishing some Ottoman and Abbasid sections on the eastern side of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. The building, which is also known as the Grand Mosque,is the holiest site in Islam because it contains the Kaaba the point to which all Muslims face when praying. The columns are the last remaining sections of the mosque which date back more than a few hundred years and form the inner perimeter on the outskirts of the white marble floor surrounding the Kaaba. The new photos, taken over the last few weeks, have caused alarm among archaeologists and come as Prince Charles a longterm supporter of preserv- flew into Saudi Arabia on Friday for a visit with the Duchess of Cornwall. The timing of his tour has been criticized by human rights campaigners after the Saudis shot seven men in public earlier this week despite major concerns about their trial and the fact that some of the men were juveniles at the time of their alleged crimes. Many of the Ottoman and Abbasid columns in Mecca were inscribed with intricate Arabic calligraphy marking the names of Prophet Muhammads companions and key moments which is believed to have been ripped down is supposed to mark the spot where Muslims believe Prophet Muhammad began his heavenly journey on a winged horse, which took him to Jerusalem and heaven in a single night. Zardari heads to Dubai to placate Bilawal
Lahore: Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday embarked on a two-day visit to Dubai amidst reports that the trip was aimed at persuading his son,Bilawal Bhutto Zardari,to return to the country and lead the Pakistan Peoples Partys election campaign. The 24-year-old Bilawal had left for Dubai over a week ago after a tiff with his father over the affairs of the PPP.A source in the PPP said Zardari had gone to Dubai on a private visit and the main purpose of his trip was to placate Bilawal. The PPP cannot afford to go into the May 11 polls without Bilawal. Many in the PPP believe that the son of the late Benazir Bhutto alone can mobilise voters in favour of the party, the source said. However, presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said Zardaris visit had nothing to do with reports of differences with Bilawal. President Zardari has gone to the UAE on a private visit. And I dont know whether Bilawal is in London or somewhere else, Babar said. He contended that reports about a rift between Zardari and Bilawal were baseless. Bilawal, recently named patron-in-chief of the PPP,developed differences with Zardari and his sister,Faryal Talpur, over the partys handling of key issues, including militant violence, sectarian attacks against Shias and the award of party tickets for the polls. The PPP had earlier announced that Bilawal would lead the partys election campaign.Following his abrupt departure for Dubai,PPP leaders said Bilawal had left the country due to security concerns.PTI

Net to nikaah: Muslims sign in to online matchmaking
Chitra Unnithan TNN
Ahmedabad: As-salaam alaikum. My sister is a fair,slim,post-graduate,nonworking,Allah-fearing girl (prays five times and recites from the Quran ) from a very educated Sunni Muslim family. We are looking for a religious,Muslim groom, should be well educated and earning (halal ).Please dont ask to chat.If interested, kindly contact me with your photograph and other details. Online matrimonial ads, like the above example,by Indian Muslims show a behavioural shift in the community, which is increasingly using the internet for matchmaking, says a study,Self presentation in online environments : A study of Indian Muslim matrimonial profiles. The study has been done by Smeeta Mishra from Jamia Millia Islamia University,Mathukutty Monippally of IIM Ahmedabad and Krishna P Jayakar of Pennsylvania State University. The study also finds that while theres change, theres continuity too.For instance, most profiles conformed to gender stereotypes in India 75% of the female profiles claimed to have been posted by someone other than the candidate, showing the importance given to family members in spouse selection.Throwing oneself open to premarital online interaction in a community, which often does not provide space for unmarried men and women to meet without supervision, sends out a dual message we are modern, yet we are traditional, says the study. Shaheen Afzal,22,has been getting replies to her profile on one such site.My parents decided the content after a lot of consideration. Our main criterion is to get a well-educated and tall groom, who also takes care of his family duties as per the laws of Islam. It is true that most Muslim families are traditional when it comes to seeking matrimony.Dating or chatting is strictly not allowed, said the Ahmedabad resident. Education was an important requirement in the ads, says the study, but income was not equally so for both the sexes.Sixty-eight per cent women did not even mention their income 42 % claimed to be either students or unemployed. Few profiles highlighted external manifestations of religiosity, such as praying five times a day, wearing a hijab or burqa, and observing Ramadan.Relatively more Muslims (35%) portrayed themselves as internally religious, that is,referred to general declarations of Islamic faith, says the study. But women claimed to be more religious.Nearly onefourth of all profiles included an Islamic greeting, with more womens ads (29%) than mens (18%) featuring them.Evidently,a a wouldbe bride might be afraid of being seen as too progressive or forward and compensates by referring to religious values. A large majority of the profiles (84%) were by Sunnis, and 27% referred to their own caste,a large chunk of them from north India.Among those who mentioned caste,83% were Syeds,Shaikhs,Pathans, and Mughals only 17% belonged to lower castes. The study concludes that the ways in which the internet complements traditional matchmaking may be a key factor for its increasing acceptability among Indian Muslims.

MALAPPURAM: Forty-five descendants of theArakkal family, erstwhile rulers of the Malabar coast, will jointly stake a claim for Rs 5,000 crore due to them as compensation from the sultanate of Saudi Arabia.
The coronation ceremony of the Sultan (left) of Arakkal royal family in September 2006.
The Saudi government had stipulated a compensation amount of Rs 400 crore in 1971 after demolishing a bungalow built by Mayin Kutty Keyi, married to Arakkal Beevi of the Arakkal family, in Mecca to provide shelter to Hajis from Kerala.
Keyi Rubath was constructed at Haram Sherief near Ka'aba in 1848. It was demolished by Saudi government in 1971 as part of the Haram extension. The government had fixed 1.4 million Saudi riyal as compensation but the amount was not released since the Saudi government was not convinced about the claimants.
Till the successors were traced, the government decided to invest it in Auqaf department. A main reason that delayed the disbursal was the row between the Arakkal and Keyi families. Both families approached the Saudi government several times claiming to be Keyi's real heirs but all their applications were rejected.
The Keyi family, citing that Mayin Kutty Keyi had no relation with the Arakkal family when he had purchased the property, claimed that they were the real inheritors. But the Arakkal family argued that Mayankutty Keyi, subsequent to his marriage with Arakkal Beevi, had accepted the title 'Ilaya' and hence they were the legal heirs. The Arakkal family also cited 'History of Keyis in Malabar' written by A P Ummer Kutty Ilaya in 1938, which stated that Mayin Kutty Keyi and Arakkal Muthubeevi had five children. In a memorandum submitted to Saudi officials, they pointed out that the Shariah follows only the marumakkathaya (matriarchal) system. Both families had pressurized successive Kerala governments to press claims on their behalf. Later, the Keyi family withdrew their claim.
The Indian consulate in Saudi Arabia has now asked Arakkal family to appoint a legal advisor to submit a list of legal claimants. The direction follows a detailed examination of documents submitted by the Arakkal family. A list of 45 people who are the successors of the Arakkal Beevi will be submitted to Saudi government through a representative to be appointed with the help of the Indian consulate.
A consulate letter advised the nomination of a "Mutawalli (legal advisor) in India. Thereafter the Mutawalli should select a suitable Saudi national as Nazir (representative). The Nazir thus selected will be authorized to pursue the case and claim the amount from Auqaf department."

Bangalore Blast: Missed Call Leads to Arrest of Three Persons
NEW DELHI: A missed call left on the phone of a two-wheeler dealer by a prime accused proved to be the main clue for the police to arrest three persons with regard to the April 17 blast outside the BJP office in Bangalore that is now being linked to a fundamentalist group named the Al-Umma.A Home Ministry official in Delhi said the main person behind the blasts was still on the run,but added that one of the arrested accused named Peer Mohideen had purchased the two-wheeler from a second-hand dealer which was used to plant the bomb.
VijendranChennai: A Sri Lankan Tamil woman, claiming that her Chennaibased husband had illegally admitted her in a private asylum at Urappakkam here and kept her confined there for 20 months, moved the Madras high court seeking 20 lakh compensation. A division bench comprising Justice K N Basha and Justice P Devadass, before whom the habeas corpus petition of K Rizmiya,36,came up for hearing, summoned her husband Kaja Mohideen to the court, and then referred the case to be settled through mediation. The mediation has been scheduled for June 5. Rizmiyas counsel P Vijendran said she had joined the Abha Hospital in Saudi Arabia as midwife in 2002,and met Kaja Mohideen,a container driver, there. They fell in love and later got married at Ambara in Sri Lanka. When their daughter was three and half years old,he left for Chennai without informing her.Rizmiya said it took her two years to reach Chennai and trace her husbands address, only to realize that Kaja Mohideen was already married with two children. He again persuaded her to return to Saudi Arabia, saying the family needed money to settle in Chennai. According to her,she returned to Chennai in 2008 and insisted that he live with her.Pretending that he was taking her to a hospital for treatment,he admitted her in Oxford Mental Health Home at Urappakkam, saying she was insane.Vijendran said his client had been in illegal confinement at the home for 20 months. Rizmiya told TOI that she was administered heavy sedatives and fed cheap food by the institutions managers, who released her after getting her to sign on some papers.I do not know what was written on that paper, she said in the petition. Noting that she had worked in Saudi Arabia and given her entire earnings to her husband for nearly seven years,Rizmiya said she had approached the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam, chief ministers special cell and the city police seeking help to reunite with her husband.Since no help came her way,she filed a petition to seek 20 lakh as compensation.
TOI INVESTIGATION Mentally ill held captive in asylum without licence
Pratiksha Ramkumar & Christin Mathew Philip TNN
Chennai: Hidden behind 15ft-high compound walls is an 80-bed privately run home for the mentally ill in Urapakkam,50km from the city. The home,Oxford Charitable Trust, has around 100 patients, but has not renewed its government licence for more than seven years. We have not issued a licence to them. They are not registered with us as a private nursing home for the mentally ill, confirmed Dr C Jayaprakash, director of the government Institute of Mental Health (IMH).As per the law,a private mental health nursing or rehabilitation home needs a licence from the IMH or the state mental health authority. The licence has to be renewed every three years. While there are 30 licensed private nursing homes for the mentally ill in the city, there are a number of centres that operate without licences or regulation. Oxford Charitable Trust functions out of a whitewashed building. The only entrance is a 6ft high blue gate, which is usually locked.TOI managed to gain entry into the building and found a kitchen where women were cutting vegetables and stirring watery sambar.Further inside is a courtyard, surrounded by locked rooms with small windows. On the first floor, women were watching television while quietly eating sambar and rice. It could pass off for an old-age home, but residents of Urapakkam say sounds of women shouting or crying loudly at odd hours suggest otherwise. They hit us if we cry, shout or try to escape, said former inmate K Rizmiya, who has filed a petition in the Madras high court against her husband who admitted her there. The staff would force us to take strong sedatives at night or inject us with medicine to put us to sleep for five days if we shouted, said Rizmiya. She protested the day she was admitted, and woke up in the same spot five days later drenched in her own urine and feces. Oxford Charitable Trust does not fulfill the prerequisites for a mental health nursing home as per the State Mental Health Rules,1990.They need a psychiatrist on call and a full-time psychologist and registered social workers, says Dr Sathyanathan, former director,IMH.They need to have an emergency care unit and an electro-convulsive therapy facility, he said. The owners describe Oxford Charitable Trust as a home for the mentally ill.We charge 6,000 a month without medicines, says one of the owners,G Ramkumar. We take care of the patient as long as the guardians want us to. They require a medical history report and prescription of medicines for admission. Rizmiya said brokers who hang around IMH falsify medical certificates and admit people in to the home.
