Orphanage in Coimbatore suspected of child trafficking Coimbatore: In the latest development in the suspected case of child trafficking from Nepal to Coimbatore, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and district administration officials have asked the orphanage authorities to submit records pertaining to how the Nepali kids came to be at the orphanage within 15 days.
We have asked the orphanage to submit all relevant documents pertaining to the admission of the children into the orphanage.Since the chairman of the centre is based in Delhi we have asked them to produce the records in 15 days.The centre here has no valid documents on the children at the moment, said S Santhakumar,RDO,Coimbatore district.
The orphanage reportedly claimed that the children were brought to Coimbatore through achild centre in Nepal called Himalayan Orphanage. They said they were not aware that the children were not orphans.
Meanwhile, the CWC is making arrangements to transport the children to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh where they will be placed under the care of the local CWC before they are handed over to their parents. They are expected to leave Coimbatore either on Tuesday or Wednesday.
The district administration conducted a preliminary inquiry into the incident which found that the orphanage had no proper documents for the children. The centre told us about the orphanage link in Nepal. We have to see the documents to ascertain what the exact offence is and if it amounts to child trafficking, Santhakumar added.
Dr PP Job,chairman of Michael Job centre for orphan girls in Sulur had claimed they were doing charitable work by providing shelter and education for orphan girls.Meanwhile,CWC chairman Dr D Rajan said the social welfare department was verifying the documents of the orphanage which did have a valid license. It is also probing the credentials of the Esther Benjamin Foundation that became instrumental in the rescue of the children, Dr Rajan added.TNN

Coimbatore: Forty-two girls, including 23 from Nepal, were rescued from an orphanage in Coimbatore by district child welfare committee volunteers on Thursday. The raid took place after the Nepal embassy sought help from the Indian government to trace and rescue 50 Nepal girls who had gone missing from the country in recent years.Twenty-three of the missing girls were being kept at an orphanage in Coimbatore.
According to child welfare officials,a large number of children, especially girls, were reported missing from Nepal during the last 10 years. It was brought to the committees notice that 23 girls from Nepal were being lodged at Michael Job Orphanage at Sulur in Coimbatore.
The Nepal embassy had given the task of tracing the missing children to the Esther Benjamins Trust,a UK-based NGO working in Nepal, which rescues Nepalese children who have been trafficked or displaced to India. The trust recently found that over 23 of these girls were in an orphanage in Sulur. It approached the Indian embassy seeking help to rescue the children.
The Coimbatore district child welfare committee conducted a raid at the Michael Job Orphanage on Thursday. They rescued 42 children from the home and took them to Don Bosco Anbu Illam in Coimbatore city.
