Two Nepalese women have accused a Saudi Arabian, who works in the embassy , of confining them in his upscale flat in Gurgaon, torturing and starving them, and raping them repeatedly . They had been domestic help in his house for the past four months. They were rescued on Monday night by a police team which was tipped by an NGO.
The FIR lodged at a police station on Tuesday mentions gang-rape, sodomy and wrongful confinement. However, police have not named the Saudi in the FIR as he possibly enjoys diplomatic immunity , which means police can't arrest him.
Only after police file their chargesheet can the government ask the Saudis to waive his immunity . But Indians will have no legal recourse if the Saudis choose a diplomatic solution and put him on a flight to Riyadh. An NGO, Maiti-India, alerted the Gurgaon police about the plight of the two Nepalese, following a lead by a third Nepalese domestic help who managed to flee some 10 days ago from the Saudi official's flat in a premium residential complex behind Ambience Mall. She worked there for only three days, and while fleeing left her mobile phone behind to help out the other two. This proved a lifeline for them.
“The girl, who managed to flee from the Saudi official's house, informed us about their ordeal and we got in touch with the two through the mobile phone left behind by her,“ Bal Krishna Pandey , the president of Maiti-India, told TOI.
“We informed the Nepalese embassy first and reached the flat with a team of Gurgaon police late on Monday night. As soon as we rang the doorbell, a woman opened the door and got into a heated argument with the woman cop. We also found that the two Nepalese were being thrashed by the family at that time. The cops, however, managed to rescue them,“ Pandey said. The two were taken to a hospital where an examination confirmed sexual assault, the police said.
