Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has blacklisted two surveyors for issuing compliance certificates for buildings which did not adhere to the original design.
While a CMDA press release did not give details, sources said the surveyors had certified that the build ings were built in keeping with planning laws and designs and standards under the national building code although they had violated norms. Certification from surveyors, structural engineers and architects is compulsory for a developer to obtain completion certificates.
A CMDA probe revealed that the two surveyors have lent their names in the past to projects which they had not surveyed.
The role of licensed surveyors is as significant as architects as they attest building plans. After a highrise under construction at Moulivakkam collapsed last year, CMDA has tightened norms for completion certificates without which buildings cannot obtain power, water and sewerage connections.
