The state government is set to give a push to the ambitious elevated corridor project connecting Chennai Airport and Chengalpet. It would decongest GST Road at a time when burgeoning population in the outlying area of the city is making roads congested.

Replying to the debate on demand for grants for housing and urban development, minister R Vaithilingam said a consultant identified for the purpose had submitted an inception report on the feasibility of forming the elevated corridor. “The study will be completed in three months. Based on the recommendations further action will be initiated,“ he said, amid loud thumping of desks by ruling party MLAs. The project was announced in the assembly last year.

The proposed elevated corridor is all set to give competition to the Madhya Kailash-Mamallapuram corridor proposed by the government on Rajiv Gandhi Salai. A consultant has been appointed by Ta mil Nadu Road Development Company to study the feasibility of the project, and the final report is expected by the end of the year. Sources said the study would also consider the viability of integrating BRTS along the corridor.

With a number of residential colonies mushrooming along GST Road, between Tambaram and airport, the elevated corridor is expected to ease traffic movement. However, a section of officials felt the existing four-lane road, owned by the National Highways Authority of India, can easily be widened to eight lanes, with the Central agency already having a detailed report on those lines.
