(Gakhwangjeon Hall of Hwaomsa Temple in Gurye County, Korea)
நவம்பர் 2011இல் the stupa of National Preceptor Jigwangguksa of Beopcheonsa temple, என்னும் பேஒப்சேனொன்சா கோவிலின் ஸ்தூபம் அசிங்கம் செய்யப்பட்டது.
Chennai: As a couple running a private detective agency in Tambaram,David and Jemima have snooped on many cheating husbands and wives. And when David cheated,it was an easy yet painful exercise for Jemima to put him behind bars. The Tambaram all-women police on Thursday arrested David after Jemima complained with supporting evidence that her husband has married another woman.David has been booked for bigamy. The second wife has now approached police with the complaint that David had married her showing some papers and claiming that he had divorced his first wife. Police said David and Jemima, who got married in 2006,were running Star Detective Agency that offered services like pre-marriage and post-marriage investigations and evidence gathering for divorce cases. When David went missing from the agencys office for long hours, the spy in Jemima smelled a rat.She employed her agencys resources to follow her husband. She said the trail led to another woman called Judy in Kundrathur, said a police officer. He said the couple were having marital problems for a couple of years and Jemima had sought a divorce. The court turned down her petition, advising the couple to take care of their two children. Jemima told police that she found out about her husbands waywardness through private investigations.According to her,David had come across an advertisement in a vernacular daily, placed by Judy,a widow with two children, seeking a husband.David took the court papers, dismissing his divorce case, and misrepresented it saying divorce had been granted. He then married Judy. Just before Pongal,David packed his bags and left the house without informing Jemima.Jemima lodged a complaint with the Perkankaranai police who, after initial investigations, shifted the case to the Tambaram all-women police station.Jemima carried out her own independent investigations and provided supporting evidence of David living with Judy. These included Davids phone call details, a police officer said. The Tambaram all-women police arrested David for bigamy and he was remanded in judicial custody.Meanwhile,Judy has lodged a cheating case against David with the Poonamallee police, stating that he had cheated her by showing some court papers to marry her. timeschennai@timesgroup.com
London: British Airways discriminated against a devoutly Christian airline employee by making her remove a crucifix at work,Europes highest court ruled Tuesday. But the court rejected discrimination cases by three other Christian claimants.BA check-in clerk Nadia Eweida sparked a national debate in Britain over religion in public life when she was sent home in November 2006 for refusing to comply with rules banning employees from wearing visible religious symbols. She claimed she was a victim of religious discrimination, seeking damages and compensation for lost wages.British courts backed BA,but Eweida went to the European Court of Human Rights. The Strasbourg,France-based court ruled on Tuesday that the airlines policy amounted to an interference with her right to manifest her religion.AP

London: Wading once more into an issue that has caused angry divisions among Anglicans around the world, the Church of England said on Friday that gay clergymen in civil partnerships could become bishops as long as they vowed to remain celibate. The House has confirmed that clergy in civil partnerships, and living in accordance with the teaching of the church on human sexuality, can be considered as candidates for the episcopate, or the office of bishop,Bishop Graham James of Norwich said in a statement. The issue has been simmering in London for years, most publicly in 2003,when the Reverend Jeffrey John,a Church of England priest who was in a long-term relationship with another male priest, was appointed bishop of Reading.Though the pair said they were celibate, the appointment provoked fury here and abroad, and John was pressed to step down. The new policy was introduced in December, when the House of Bishops published a list of recent decisions. One of those was to lift the ban on clergymen in civil partnerships becoming bishops. In 2005,the church ruled that people in civil partnerships could become clergy members, but the ruling did not apply to bishops. The decision does not affect women in the church, who are not allowed to become bishops at all.Nor does it have any bearing on gay priests not in civil partnerships, since they are also expected to be celibate, said a spokesman for the Church of England, the Reverend Arun Arora. The church makes a big distinction between sexual orientation and practice, he said. The bottom line is that we have no issue with sexuality God loves you either way... But when it comes to sex,the only way we understand it is that it should be expressed within the confines of marriage.NYT NEWS SERVICE
Iskcon closure in Russia to figure in talks with Putin
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
New Delhi: A year after Russia sought to ban the Bhagavad Gita, the Iskcon Krishna temple in Moscow is facing closure by the Russian government.By January 15,2013,Iskcon monks said their Moscow temple, the only Hindu temple in Russia, would be demolished by the city authorities. As Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives on Monday for a day of talks with the Indian government, the temple issue is likely to figure in the discussions, not least because the issue has been pursued by the foreign ministry. Indian ambassador to Russia Ajai Malhotra has asked the Moscow authorities to give an extension to a temporary temple which is set to expire on December 31,2012,until they complete the construction of a Vedic cultural centre.Asked about the proposed demolition,Russian ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin dismissed fears of demolition. However,Iskcon monk Madanmohan Das said the demolition order has not been revoked,so the temple is due to come down in January, because the authorities said it violates the urban building code and has no legal grounds for existence. In a statement, the temple officials said they feared that even the permanent temple would face the axe.A source in the Moscow mayors office said on condition of anonymity that Mayor Sergey Sobyanin also ordered to axe the permanent temple project, which Delhi chief minister Sheila Dik**** and previous Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov had included in a joint declaration in 2006 as a symbol of cultural cooperation between the cities.Following the declaration,Indian ambassador Ajai Malhotra laid the cornerstone for the new project earlier this year, the statement said. This year,Russia plans to push for land from the Indian government for a Russian orthodox church in Delhi. In 2004,Moscows Iskcon temple was demolished and the Iskcon group was offered another plot to build a temple.Reports said the offer was withdrawn after Russian orthodox church members protested against the temple building plans.

Vatican City: Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday granted his former butler a Christmas pardon for stealing the pontiff s private papers and leaking them to a journalist, one of the gravest Vatican security breaches in recent times. The pope met for 15 minutes with Paolo Gabriele in the prison where the ex-butler was serving his sentence.Gabriele was subsequently freed and returned to his Vatican City apartment where he lived with his wife and three children. The Vatican said he would not continue living or working in the Vatican, but that it intends to offer him the possibility to serenely restart his life together with his family. The Vatican spokesman, the Rev Federico Lombardi, said the popes meeting intense and personal. The pardon closes an embarrassing chapter for the Vatican, capping a sensational scandal that exposed power struggles, and allegations of corruption and homosexual liaisons in the highest levels of the Catholic Church.AFP
People with no religious affiliation make up the third-largest global group in a new study of the size of the worlds faiths, placing after Christians and Muslims and just before Hindus. The study, based on extensive data for the year 2010,also showed Islam and Hinduism are the faiths mostly likely to expand in the future while Jews have the weakest growth prospects.Christianity is the most evenly spread religion, present in all regions of the world, while Hinduism is the least with 94% of its population in one country,India. Overall,84% of the worlds inhabitants, estimated at 6.9 billion, identify with a religion, according to the study entitled The Global Religious Landscape issued by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life on Tuesday. The unaffiliated category covers all those who profess no religion, from atheists and agnostics to people with spiritual beliefs but no link to any established faith. Many of the religiously unaffiliated do hold religious or spiritual beliefs, the study stressed.Belief in God or a higher power is shared by 7% of unaffiliated Chinese adults,30% of unaffiliated French adults and 68% of unaffiliated US adults, it said.
An age breakdown showed Muslims had the lowest median age at 23 years, compared to 28 for the world population. The median age highlights the population bulge at the point where half the population is above and half below that number.REUTERS
London: Protests over the horrible death of a Karnataka-born dentist from pregnancy-related complications has forced deeply-Catholic Ireland to tweak its no-abortion policy to allow for termination of pregnancy in cases where the mothers life is in danger. The Irish government said on Tuesday that it would bring in legislation to allow abortions in hospitals once doctors determine that a mothers life is at risk. The move comes seven weeks after the death of 31-year-old Savita Halappanavar, who was refused an abortion in a Galway hospital. She was 17 weeks pregnant, and doctors refused her pleas for termination of pregnancy. She was suffering a miscarriage and died of septicaemia three days after requesting a termination. Halappanavars husband alleged that Savita was told doctors could do nothing because Ireland was a Catholic country. Abortion is banned in Ireland as per a papal diktat.Dublins decision is,therefore, likely to be controversial and will in all probability face strong opposition from conservative Catholics.Abortion has historically split Ireland, which fought for and won freedom from predominantly non-Catholic Britain. It has held five referendums on the matter since 1983.It is one of two European Union countries the other being Malta where mothers cannot have an abortion even when their lives are in danger. However,Irelands cabinet made the announcement after intense public pressure from secular elements after Halappanavar lost her life.

Abortion bill to remove ambiguities
London: Ireland is one of two European Union countries the other being Malta where mothers cannot have an abortion even when their lives are in danger. However,Irelands cabinet made the announcement to tweak its no-abortion policy after intense public pressure from secular elements following the death of Indian dentist,31-year-old Savita Halappanavar, from pregnancyrelated complications. The government intends to bring clarity so as to remove the prevailing legal ambiguity over exactly when doctors can perform an abortion if a womans life is at risk. The bill will be drafted in the New Year and debated by the Irish parliaments health committee before it is voted upon in the house known as the Dail. Irelands health minister,James Reilly, said he was conscious of the sensitivities involved.I know that most people have personal views on this matter. However, the government is committed to ensuring that the safety of pregnant women in Ireland is maintained and strengthened, said Reilly. For that purpose,we will clarify in legislation and regulation what is available by way of treatment to a woman when a pregnancy gives rise to a threat to a womans life.
Times View
The Irish cabinets decision to repeal legislation banning abortion and to introduce regulations that allow for abortions when the mothers life is threatened should be welcomed even if it can be argued that it does not go far enough in allowing women reproductive freedom.Had this been done earlier,Savita Halappanavar would probably not have lost her life. For those who would still argue that a ban on abortion is pro-life,we can only point out that Savitas case should make it abundantly clear that it can often end up taking lives that could otherwise have been saved.
Jerusalem: Circumcision is one of Judaisms most important laws and for generations of faithful it has symbolised a Biblical covenant with God.But in Israel, more and more Jewish parents are saying no to the blade. Its such a taboo in Israel and in Judaism, said Gali, nursing her six-week-old son, about the decision not to have him circumcised. Its like coming out of the closet, she said, asking to be identified by her first name only because she had not told her relatives yet. Nearly all baby boys in Israel are circumcised.Be their parents ultra-Orthodox or totally secular Jews,it is by far the most common choice. Jewish circumcisions are done when the baby is eight days old.The majority are performed by a mohel,a religious man trained in the procedure carried out in a festive religious ceremony called a brit,Hebrew for covenant. But an increasing minority fear it is a form of physical abuse. Its the same as if someone would tell me its our culture to cut off a finger when he is born, said Rakefet Kaufman, who also did not have her son circumcised.People should see it as abuse because it is done to a baby without asking him, she said. When Gali learnt she was carrying a baby boy it was obvious to her that he would be circumcised. But she started to think again after a conversation with a friend whose son was uncircumcised. She asked me what my reason was for doing it,was it religious I said no.Was it for health reasons No.Social No.Then it began to sink in.I began to read more about it,enter Internet forums,I began to realise that I cannot do it. The phenomenon is growing,I have no doubt, said Ronit Tamir, who founded a support group for families who have chosen not to circumcise their sons. When we started the group 12 years ago we had to work hard to find 40 families... They were keeping it secret and we had to promise them wed keep it secret, she said. Then, wed get one or two phone calls a month.Nowadays I get dozens of emails and phone calls a month, hundreds a year. In societies around the world who circumcise boys for non-religious reasons, out of habit or tradition or because of the perceived health benefits, the practice can be controversial. The American Academy of Paediatrics said in August that the health benefits of infant circumcision potentially avoiding infection, cancer and sexually-transmitted diseases outweighed the risks, but said parents should make the final call.REUTERS
